Dr. Afrasheem and Gubad represent moderate voice of Islam in Maldives

It’s quite refreshing to see our Member of Parliament Dr. Afrasheem back in the mainstream media. I was fortunate to see the MP on DhiTV recently, and it was interesting to see at least one Muslim who doesn’t twist Islam and claim music, photography, art, movies and all other kinds of human creativity are haram. Look at recent Dheenuge Magu leaflets on Friday by the Islamic Ministry (monopolised by the extremist Adhaalath Party) and you tend to wonder whether you are even allowed to live!
People like Afrasheem and Gubad Abu Bakr, on the other hand, represents the moderate voice of Islam in Maldives, something which is sorely lacking now in Maldives which is under threat from extremism, represented by organisations such as Adaalath Party. I still maintain my view that Adhaalath is a far worse evil for Maldives’ nation development than the Maumoon regime.
Extremists will of course label Afrasheem and Gubad as “deviant” because deviants won’t see themselves as deviants, right? I bet if these extremists come on a live debate with Afrasheem and Gubad, their extremist viewpoints will be easily defeated. They won’t have anything to argue with. Since extremists have nothing useful or constructive to say, their only remaining weapon is painting moderates like Afrasheem and Gubad in a bad light.
One case in point is that extremists now try to make Afrasheem and Gubad look evil just because they happen to be on DRP side. I could argue the same with Adhaalath who are addicted to power too. Before they came to be in the current government, they talked about getting rid of bank interest, successfully carrying out tourism without alcohol business and had even criticised President Nasheed saying he was “not presidential material” and officially claimed they will not vote for him in the October 2008 presidential elections. Hence, their current “marriage of convenience” with the MDP is a blatant expose of their own addiction to power. Adhaalath, being the extremist hypocrites they are, is giving Maldivians this message: religion can take a backseat as far as power is concerned.
Maldivians who seek the truth won’t be deluded and blinded by extremist propaganda. Thank God for that.
