Letter on Maldives government’s release of terrorists captured in Pakistan

I’m writing to express my concern. Last night on TVM Foreign Minister Dr. Shaheed and Islamic Affairs Minister Dr. Majeed appeared.
Dr. Shaheed seemed visibly shaken. The Foreign Minister was rambling excuses to the effect that extremists and terrorists are a product of the society and therefore we need more broad-based approaches to incorporating them into society.
I agree that Maldives has several social woes due to gross mismanagement and neglect of human development under Maumoon over the last 30 years. However, does this mean that the government should release terrorists without rehabilitating them first?
Is there any psychiatric evaluation done before releasing these suspected terrorists? Don’t we ordinary people have a right to feel safe from these delinquents?
Do we need to remind the Maldives’ government again that a suspect linked to the Sultan Park bombing who was freed by the court later died in “Jihad” overseas? Doesn’t the government have a right to safeguard Maldives’ vital tourism industry?
I’m not surprised at the government’s behavior: being in unholy matrimony with extremists like the Adhaalath Party has resulted in President Mohamed Nasheed to lose the ideals he fought for.
Well, he might forget but we ordinary Maldivians have not so easily forgotten that when we voted for him in 2008, we were not expecting to replace one 30-year-old burden (Maumoonism) with another more serious (Talibanisation) problem.
Therefore, I’m not going to vote for Nasheed in 2013.

there’s only ONE mistake Prez Nasheed could make. that would be to take Maldives down into the same quagmire that Pakistan finds itself in today…
the pressure from the West (US, UK, IMF) and from India is immense, but i hope Nasheed is smart enough not to make that mistake!!
So who are you going to vote then? Hey, why don’t you become a candidate. I’m sure you’ll get more votes than i bra or omar, aka the political joker. :D

I also think it’s a serious issue that the government needs to justify properly to the public. How can people who have been caught with arms and classified as terrorists be repartriated and RELEASED without any action being taken?
That’s just the same as saying what they did was right and justified and that it is no problem to break the laws of other countries, take up arms and do whatever comes to someone’s mind. This is just ridiculous!
