Recent developments

On 3 May 2009, World Press Freedom Day, Hilath, along with two friends, launched and became the Editor of Eydhafushi Times, a community online newspaper, registered with the Maldives’ Department of Information, catering to Baa atoll community.

In the same month, Above Maldives: A Photographic Journey over the Atolls & Islands of Maldives, to which Hilath contributed to, was published by Atoll Images, a full subsidiary of Water Solutions Pvt Ltd, a Maldives environmental consultancy firm providing all kinds of solutions related to the environment, water and coastal management. The full-color hardcover book is available at a retail price of US$60.

Hilath Rasheed resigned from Maldives newspaper Haveeru Daily in January 2009 and has now chosen to be self-employed as a freelance journalist, writer and public relations manager.

He has a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication (Curtin University of Technology, Australia) his subjects being journalism, public relations, film and television, radio broadcasting, multimedia, graphic communication, design and animation, and advertising.

An alumni of Majeediyya School, Center for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) and Malaysia’s Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, he had a short stint as Research Officer at the Foreign Relations Section of the President’s Office from 1994-1995 where he was involved, among other things, in the drafting of English language speeches for former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom given at international forums and conferences and State Visits by leaders of various countries.

Hilath took up a career in journalism by joining Haveeru in 1995. During the past 14 years, he also worked in editing positions in The Monday Times, The Evening Weekly, and Jazeera Daily and contributed to magazines Huvaas, Adduvas, Udhares and Fiyes, and foreign travel, dive and environment magazines.

An English language short story by him about contemporary youth life in Maldives’ problematic capital Male’ was published in an American anthology of short stories from various countries. His short stories in Dhivehi and English, mostly about the dilemmas and desperate conditions facing contemporary Maldives’ youth, have been published in Haveeru Daily, The Monday Times, The Evening Weekly and Huvaas magazine as well.

He has translated into Dhivehi and published a book about the last days of the late Princess Diana of Wales. He has also made experimental short films, video advertisements, and music videos for various parties, and subtitled Dhivehi films in English for film festivals.

He has contributed articles and photographs to Reuters, Agence France Presse (AFP), the Associated Press (AP), Malaysia’s The Vox magazine, and have had his articles published in publications by the Red Cross and Commonwealth Press Union and the United Nations Children’s Fund. His voice was also dubbed for a UNICEF documentary and he acted in a public service video advertisement of UNICEF.

He has served as Communications Officer for the British Red Cross’ Maldives Tsunami Recovery Program, as Public Relations Officer for Maldives Surfing Association and as Founder of the Second Division team Football Club Cicada.

He has a keen interest in literature, film, photography, music, and bodyboarding.
